It has been announced that multi-Award winning musical The Book of Mormon is going down under. The show is scheduled to have its Australian premiere in Melbourne 2017. It is expected that this will most likely be followed by a tour of the country. The State Premier, Daniel Andrews, announced the news on his Facebook page commenting “I’m thrilled we’re bringing the most successful piece of theatre in the world today to Victoria”
The arrival of the musical is hoped to bring a welcome boost to Melbourne tourism. Andrews went on to comment “Victoria is the arts and culture capital, and The Book of Mormon will attract thousands of interstate and international visitors to our state, creating more jobs”. Melbourne is also the most progressive and cosmopolitan part of Australia making it the perfect place to open this controversial and provocative musical.
The Australian production will be co-directed by the original creative team of Tray Parker and choreographer Casey Nicholaw. However the production team are looking to cast home grown talent in the Australian show. The team are said to be excited about bring the show to Australia with Tray Parker commenting “We can’t wait to get started. Everyone says we should look to Tassie for casting so that’s where we’re going first.” The Australian show will be produced by Scott Rudin, John Frost, Anne Garefino, and Important Musicals.
The Book of Mormon opened directly on Broadway in 2011 at the Eugene O’Neill Theater. A London production swiftly followed opening at the West End’s Prince of Wales Theatre in 2013. This blockbuster show that scooped a staggering nine Tony and four Olivier Awards sold out for an impressive 180 weeks in a row on Broadway and has broken countless box office records. With excitement already building for this most hotly anticipated of musicals The Book of Mormon’s reign of glory looks set to continue. The show is due to open at Melbourne’s Princess Theatre from January 2017.
